South African diplomatic staff owe more than £600 000 in unpaid traffic congestion charges to the British government, it has been revealed.

According to the British Foreign Office, 57 diplomatic missions owe more than £100,000 each in traffic congestion charge fines.

Fines have not been paid since the introduction of the charge in 2003.

However, the Saffa government isn’t alone in its fine dodging. Bangladesh tops the list, owing £80, 612.

The document, made available by British Foreign Secretary, William Hague, revealed what else South African diplomatic staff had been up to while visiting:

In 2005, one person from the South African diplomatic corps was apprehended for theft and robbery of a motor vehicle and driving without insurance.

In 2006, one person from the South African diplomatic corps was apprehended for attempted robbery, one for robbery, and one for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Sounds like a fun visit.
