Vice-Chancellor Stuart McCutcheon told The New Zealand Herald that he didn’t think anyone had been hurt in the incident, although one person is believed to have sustained a mirror cut whilst smashing a fire alarm.
A group of students was believed to be in the theatre at the time the fire started.
The extent of the damage done to the building remains as yet unclear.
More than a dozen fire engines attended the incident on Princes Street.
It is believed that the theatre’s curtains initially caught fire before spreading to the roof.
The fire has been extinguished and fire fighters and currently working to make the site safe for incident investigation to begin.
