Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola insists Cesc Fabregas may still sign for Barcelona this summer, despite Arsenal so far refusing to release their captain.

Guardiola has admitted he sees Fabregas as the last piece in his jigsaw, foreshadowing a fresh bid for the Gunners’ midfielder.

Guardiola told the Daily Telegraph: ‘We’re short of just one player and everyone knows which one that is.’

The Fabregas transfer saga has dragged on for over a year now and it is thought that the player wants a move back to his boyhood club.

Arsenal have rejected an offer of £26m already this summer and it is believed Barca’s new bid will be nowhere near the £40m the Gunners are asking for Fabregas.

The Catalans have already signed Chilean Alexis Sanchez from Udinese this summer but Guardiola appears determined to get his man.

Arsenal were booed off the field at the Emirates on Sunday following a 1-1 draw with New York Red Bulls and manager Arsene Wenger’s failure to complete a major signing this summer has been another cause for complaint.

Arsenal are interested in Valencia’s Juan Mata, Everton’s Phil Jagielka and Blackburn’s Chris Samba but chairman Peter Hill-Wood explained: “As Arsene said, we are looking to buy some players, but we are not going to do our business in public.”
