Dr Bruce Berry, who can speak five languages and is in the top one per cent of Britain’s biggest boffins, told The Sun newspaper that he liked working as a lollipop man because “I wanted to do something for the community. It’s nice to get kiddies to and from school safely”.

Aged 70, the Mensa member has a PhD, three BAs, and seven MAs.

He is also fluent in French, German, Italian, Spanish and Russian.

Bachelor Berry bikes four miles, five days a week, to help kids cross the road safely outside Crofton School in Wakefield, Yorkshire.

He might only be paid £200 a month, but Berry told the tabloid: “I feel part of the family there.”
