Maggie Meier contracted meningitis in 2008 and was admitted to hospital after suffering a seizure.
During her three month coma Maggie, who is from Overland Park, USA, was continually moved to avoid her limbs from stiffening.
But Maggie’s basketball instincts were only awakened after her family sat her up in a chair and placed a basketball in her hands.
Upon feeling the ball in her hands she began making shooting movements.
Maggie’s doctor, William Graf told The Daily: “The act of shooting a basketball must have been ingrained as one of Maggie’s basic instincts.
“Her basketball shooting motion came back to her even before she was able to stand up or walk again.”
Maggie awoke from her coma in late 2008 and is still on the road to recovery, but has already relearned how to walk, talk and read again.
“When I’m out there, I don’t think about it that much… But when I do think about it, it’s pretty awesome,” Maggie told The Daily.
