During Sunday morning an argument between two people escalated into a 30 people street brawl in Sydney, and in Melbourne more than 100 people were involved in a fight reported to have been started by a local gang.
The Australian summer should have finished a couple of weeks back, but the temperature in Sydney is unusually hot and humid for the time of year.
New South Wales police attributed the outbreak of violence over the weekend to excessive alcohol consumption. The hotter and more irritable people get the more alcohol they drink.
As for some reprieve forecasters predict high temperatures will drop as storms approach New South Wales later this week.
