An act of kindness went terribly wrong when a holidaymaker was attacked by a bird he was trying to rescue, ending with the man having his eye pecked out.

Michael Buckland, 38, found the injured ganet lying on the beach after it was startled by a dog. But when he tried to pick up the bird, it turned around and pecked his right eye out.

"My eye was hanging out. I had to put it back on the beach," said Michael.

Michael, of Heath, Cardiff, was on vacation with his girlfriend at Gower, and was rushed to the hospital after the attack.

Surgeons were unable to repair his vision. Michael said all he can see now is a "bright light" in his bad eye.
