Cities in South Africa are being flooded with condoms to offer football fans “ultimate safety” during the World Cup 2010.

In the Nelson Mandela Bay municipality, 2.4 million condoms will be distributed “to ensure ultimate safety at the tournament”, a city official said.

The condoms would be available to hotels, bed and breakfasts and “any other recreational facility that would like to ensure that they have enough condoms for the 2010 Fifa World Cup on their premises”, the official said.

So although fans in this region – which includes Port Elizabeth, Uitenhage and Despatch – are being offered as much protection as they need, fans in Cape Town better not get too amorous.

City officials there are distributing two condoms, per hotel room, per night for the World Cup, according to Cape Town Tourism chief executive Marriette du-Toit-Helmbold, the Cape Argus reports.

With football fans fond of saying “we’re lovers, not fighters”, it will be interesting to see if two per night is enough.

“We are well aware that sexual activity is part of a holiday experience for most but we are suggesting that people remain responsible while having a good time by practicing safe sex.” said Du-Toit-Helmbold.
