Why it works
One chair wasn’t enough for this woman in Granada, Nicaragua, framed by Janika on a visit following a three-month study trip in Costa Rica. “My friends and I were just walking around the neighborhood when I saw this woman sitting against this bright blue wall,” she tells us.
“From afar, I knew it was an image I had to capture for the contrast between the wall, her shirt, and her beautiful white hair. I really enjoy taking photos of individuals that catch my attention in the streets.”

Why it works Edinburgh-based Shelley is well accustomed to seeing stunning and grand old structures, but this view of the Alhambra in Andalucía, Spain, still captured her imagination. “I was in Andalucía last month and after winding my way up through the old Albayzin area in Granada, I came out at a square that looked across to the Alhambra,” she says.
The timing was just right, she adds. “I got it just as the sun came streaming through the clouds above the Sierra Nevadas.”
