Michael Clarke has reportedly admitted he will have to move up the order after those before him in the line-up failed miserably again.
At least his side were record breakers, but only as the first team in Test match history to declare in the first innings and go on to lose by an innings.
The Aussies started day four with a mountain to climb and didn’t even threaten the foothills – needing 192 runs to make India bat again and with two wickets already lost, they folded like egg whites to be bowled out for 131.
“We have had guys get in and out without making big scores,” said Michael Clarke, the only player in the side who can be totally confident of his place. “That’s unacceptable at this level.”
Australia made the India spinners look unplayable, Ravi Ashwin in particular, who took 5-63 in the innings.
They will now need to win the remaining two Tests to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
A usually measured Clarke hit out at his side’s ineptitude: “They outplayed us in every facet of the game. There is no doubt we have a lot of work to do in all facets of the game and there will be no stone left unturned.
“There will be a lot of hard work, I can assure you. You don’t get better sitting on the couch. We have had guys get in and out without making big scores. That’s unacceptable at this level.”
