BMW have revealed that, across the world, 235,000 cars are to be recalled amidst fears that a faulty water pump could overheat.

The decision has been made after BMW received a number of complaints by Mini owners reporting that their cars had caught fire while they were left parked or while they had been sitting at the wheel.

They have been seven reported cases in the UK and 12 in the United States.

A spokesman for the German car manufacturer has said owners would receive a recall notice within a few weeks, and said of the suspected cooling system fault:

“In more extreme cases it could create a heat build-up in the wiring and some smouldering.

“Potentially it could cause a fire. We are not aware of any accidents or injuries connected with this. The important thing is that when people receive the letter they simply go to their dealer and get a new water pump fitted.”
