Chanel’s creative director, Karl Lagerfeld, was slammed earlier this week after saying: “The thing at the moment is Adele. She is a little too fat, but she has a beautiful face and a divine voice.”

However Lagerfeld is now saying that his “fat” comment was taken “out of context”, and that he is actually a huge fan.

“I’d like to say to Adele that I am your biggest admirer. Sometimes when you take a sentence out of the article it changes the meaning of the thought,” Lagerfeld said.

“I actually prefer Adele, she is my favourite singer and I am a great admirer of her. I lost over 30 kilos over 10 years ago and have kept it off. I know how it feels when the press is mean to you in regards to your appearance.

“Adele is a beautiful girl. She is the best. And I can’t wait for her next CD.”

Lagerfeld did not save his derision solely for Adele, also claiming that Russian men are ugly, Greeks are corrupt and that “people in magazines are 50 per cent bimbo, and 50 per cent pregnant women”.

For her part, Adele has other things to think about, having battled a haemorrhage to her vocal chord.

“It felt like someone put a curtain over my throat. It felt like something popped in my throat,” she told chat show host Anderson Cooper on 60 Minutes.

“I had laser surgery. [They] put lasers down your throat, cut off the polyp, and kind of laser your haemorrhage back together and fix it.”
