The woman was attacked by a resident at a hostel the Redfern area of Sydney.
It has been alleged that the man pushed his way into the woman’s room. When she declined sex, he allegedly tried to sexually assault her, before leaving the room and returning with a knife.
It has been reported that he stabbed the woman a number of times, including in the throat. In the fight, the woman reportedly triumphed in getting hold of the knife and wounding the assailant.
Witnesses reported hearing screams coming from the hostel on Cleveland Street, followed by the woman running out on to the street, covered in blood.
Both the man and the woman are being treated in hospital and the police are with them.
