Cynthia Germanotta worried about her daughter’s mental health when she was growing up, she revealed in an interview with Oprah Winfrey.

Germanotta said: “When Gaga started emerging, when she was performing – I think it was at Joe’s Pub downtown – and she was in her bikini performing Lady Starlight and decided that night to … actually light hairspray on fire.”

“Her father and I were like, ‘Honestly, I think she has a screw loose.’”

Gaga, whose real name is Stefani Germanotta, gave an interview with Oprah at her family home in New York, declaring it was “her last for a long time”.

She said: “Other than this interview, Oprah, I do not intend to speak to anyone for a very long time. No press, no television.”

Gaga said she has stopped paying attention to what the media says about her.

“I don’t read a damn thing,” she said.

The 25-year-old also explained how she liked to isolate herself from other people to help her creative process, which makes her mother worry about her.

Gaga responded to her mother’s comments, saying: “My creative process can be a bit overwhelming for my mom and sometimes I need to shut myself off and whether I am drinking too much or whatever it is.”

The outlandish singer wouldn’t give much away about her romance with actor Taylor Kinney, telling Oprah: “I would just say that I’m very happy – that’s all I’m saying – I am happy, I am very happy.”
