Federer and Del Potro engaged in a tense battle for the chance to play in the men’s singles final at Wimbledon and until the end it was unclear who would triumph.
Federer has never won a singles medal at the Olympics, but did take home a gold in the doubles event in Beijing.
Ahead of today’s match, Federer said: “I think I am playing my best. I don’t know if I can play a whole lot better. Overall, I’m extremely happy. Obviously, being in the medal matches, at least I’ll get two shots. That’s why I looked at this match as a final.”
