At the time of writing, Team GB has five Olympic gold medals, six silver and four bronze.
The country’s newfound place on the medal table is a result of a second day running in which Britain has basked in Olympic glory.
Earlier in the day, shooter Peter Wilson won a gold in the double trap shooting. Hot on his heels were Etienne Stott and Tim Baillie, who won gold in the two-man canoe slalom as team mates David Florence and Richard Hounslow steered to silver.
Soon after came a silver medal from Gemma Gibbons who took on the world champion in the women’s 78 kg judo final.
Thus far, the icing on Britain’s day six Olympic cake came when men’s cycling sprint team Chris Hoy, Philip Hindes and Jason Kenny won the gold medal, bringing down the London 2012 velodrome.
The only blip in today’s Team GB climb up the medal table came when Jess Varnish and Victoria Pendleton were disqualified from the team sprint finals.
Nothing can spoil the day for happy Brits however as the host country gloats over its newfound place on the medal table. The fact that it is still 18 medals behind the current London 2012 leaders, China, should be of no account!
