The Olympic gold comes after Jones stunned world number one Tseng Li-Cheng of Chinese Taipe with a winning head kick in the semi final.
Her final fight against Chinese Yuzhuo Hou in the women’s under-57kgs was won 6-4, an impressive victory for Jones who was beaten by the Chinese fighter in last year’s taekwondo World Championship final.
The youngster’s win will be marked with a gold-painted Royal Mail postbox in her hometown of Flint.
Jones said this morning: “It was an incredible day with amazing support.
“To have this gold medal around my neck is just bonkers and still hasn’t really sunk in.”
A new stamp to mark the achievement is being rushed out by Royal Mail today – the 25th gold medal stamp to be issued.
Jones added: “To be the first British athlete to win a gold is amazing but to win it in the UK is something else. Also having my family here with me has made it extra special and I know all my friends back home have been cheering me on and putting posters in their windows. I want to thank them all.”
