‘The Chosen One’, handpicked by Sir Alex Ferguson as his replacement and given a six-year deal, spent just 10 months in the job and it was largely painful viewing for United fans.
He leaves with a number of unwanted records – a first home loss to West Brom since 1978, the first home loss to Newcastle since 1972, the first home loss to Everton since 1992, a first ever home defeat to Swansea and a first league loss to Stoke since 1984 a few of them.
Moyes was dismissed shortly after 0800 BST this morning.
United had failed to comment on reports that on Monday that he was to be sacked – an unusual move for a club that always maintained it would give Moyes time in the role.
That time has run out, a toothless 2-nil defeat to old club Everton on Sunday the final straw.
In a very short statement on its website the club said: “Manchester United has announced that David Moyes has left the Club. The club would like to place on record its thanks for the hard work, honesty and integrity he brought to the role”.
Louis Van Gaal, Jurgen Klopp, Diego Simeone and Laurent Blanc are all possible replacements.
Ryan Giggs is expected to take charge of the team against Norwich on Saturday.
