In their Champions League semi-final first leg, Dortmund, seemingly taking inspiration from Bayern’s triumphant win the night before over Barcelona, stormed out of the gates and recorded a 4-1 drubbing of Mourinho’s men.

Polish striker Robert Lewandowski lead from the front netting in the eighth minute before Cristiano Rolando levelled the score for Madrid just before half time. It proved to be a false dawn for Real though, who were undone by three further second half goals from Lewandowski.

The highly rated striker scored in the 50th and 55th minute, before capping of a stunning performance by converting a 67th minute penalty when Marco reuss was fouled.

Ddespite their mauling, Mourinho remains defiant Real can overturn the deficit in the second leg next week at the Bernabéu, saying that there is still hope and that his players will give everything to make it to the final.

“Things seem impossible but they are not,” the former Chelsea boss aid after the match.
