The win is the 46th of Mundine’s boxing career as 27-year-old Jackson lasted the full 10 rounds, but did little else but survive a late flurry as the former rugby league star went for the knockout.
The fight came about after American Carson Jones, and then Billy Lyell, dropped out of the bout, leaving promoter Khoder Nasser to find a last-minute opponet.
The difference in class and preparation – Mundine had been readying for months compared to Jackson’s one-week notice – was clear as the Australian was awarded every round.
“He was a tough boy. He came to fight,” Mundine said. “But if you can’t get a knockout, you can’t get much better than a stoppage. I did what I came to do.”
Mundine has promised to fight more and talk less in 2014 as he pushed for a title shot.
On the undercard, Wallabies fly-half Quade Cooper maintained his perfect boxing record against 40-year-old cage fighter Warren Tresidder with a fourth round TKO.
