Polled residents were asked to rate 12 different measurements of happiness, including how they felt about the safety and neighbourliness of their area and the size and condition of their property. Other unhappy neighbourhoods listed included Croydon, East Central London, Illford, South East London, Enfield, North West London, West London and North London.

Harrogate, the North Yorkshire town famous for its mineral spas, was listed as the happiest town in the country.

Rightmove director Miles Shipside said that the reason the capital performs poorly is because living space is at a premium.

“Among reasons why London was marked down are topics that may be considered as sacrifices when living in a major city, such as the amount of space to live comfortably and safety,” he noted.

The poll was conducted for a Rightmove’s Happy At Home index survey
