The kidney has been donated by a man for his sister at University of Toledo Medical Center earlier this month, but after a mix up it ended up getting thrown out with a load of other hospital waste. When it was discovered two and a half hours later it was too late to be used and so had to be scrapped.

The mix up was attributed to “human error”, according to spokesman Toby Klinger of the organ at the time, and two nurses have since been placed on paid leave.

The intended recipient opted to wait for another donor organ.

UTMC has begun an investigation into the procession of events and mistakes
which lead to this, and have suspended their organ transplant program in the meantime too, pending this investigation.
