The Met Office today confirmed that this April has been the wettest on record, with rainfall “well above” average across the UK.
The drowned man was pronounced dead at the scene in Hampshire.
A Hampshire police spokesman confirmed: “A man has died after the car he was travelling in was submerged in water near Newbury.
“Police were called at 9.12am this morning to reports that a vehicle was stuck in a ford at Thornford Road, near Compton Wood.
“A woman was able to get out of the vehicle but a man was recovered from it. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
“The woman was taken to Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital where she is being treated for shock.”
According to reports, the car was not only completely submerged, but upside down.
The Environment Agency has 35 flood warnings in place and has set up incident rooms in Gloucestershire, the Midlands and Wessex.
According to the Met Office, the wettest areas of the UK are in the west Midlands, eastern Wales and south-west England.
