The Serb was phenomenal winning his 20th straight game at Melbourne Park as Ferrer copped a 6-2 6-2 6-1 lesson – the only respite for the Spaniard was that it only lasted 89 minutes.
Djokovic amassed more than double Ferrer’s points, no what would be expected of the world number five. However Spain’s number two, when Rafael Nadal is fit, looked like a child playing a man as at one stage the Joker won 12 points in a row, the equivalent of three straight games. He lost just 11 points in the third set against Ferrer, who is a renowned fighter.
Djokovic will play 17-time grand slam winner Roger Federer or US Open champion Andy Murray, who are expected to have a much more torrid time with each other than today’s match.
“I played incredible tennis,” Djokovic said. “I felt very comfortable and very confident from the start.
“I was aware of David’s quality, I wanted to be aggressive on the court, but this is definitely one of the best performances I’ve had in my career. I love this court, I love this atmosphere.”
If he plays Federer, they’ll both be going for records – the Swiss will win his fifth Aussie Open crown (the most of the Open era).
If Murray wins the semi it’ll be a rematch of the US Open final in which Murray won his first Grand Slam.
