Most of us have been there, and it is utterly annoying.
But, German car manufacturer Daimler has a novel approach to dealing with holiday mail – it deletes them.
Yep, the company has created a tool that allows their workers to automatically delete all emails sent to their work accounts while on annual leave.
The “Mail on Holiday” assistant replies to any delivered post with a warning or instructions on who the sender should contact instead, nifty huh?
“Our employees should relax on holiday and not read work-related emails,” Daimler board member Wilfried Porth told the FT.
“They start back after the holidays with a clean desk. There is no traffic jam in their inbox. That is an emotional relief.”
The German’s aren’t the only ones in on the action, remember – France has brought in rules to protect employees from work email disturbing them outside office hours.
It sounds great. But is it suitable for everyone? And could it happen in the UK.
Probably not.
Sadly, most of us have admitted to checking work emails while on holiday, this writer included, because we believe, rightly or wrongly, that it’ll help us feel more relaxed and more able to enjoy the day ahead.
Daimler says the auto-delete policy is optional and no record will be kept of who chooses to use it and who doesn’t.
