The track, by LMFAO featuring Lauren Bent and GoonRock, beat out competition from Adele’s Someone Life You, pop-rockers Maroon 5’s Moves Like Jagger and Jessie J’s Price Tag, which claimed second, third and fourth places respectively.

The album chart was another story though, and saw Adele’s 21 soar to first place (it has been named the biggest selling album of the century too), with Rihanna’s Loud coming in second and Bruno Mars’ Doo-Wops & Hooligans filling out the podium on third.

Adele was also named artist of the year by iTunes editorial team, to which the singer, who is currently recovering from an operation to save her voice, said: “I’m thrilled to top the iTunes album chart of 2011 and to be iTunes artist of the year is just amazing.”
