At least 25 pigs were killed when a truck transporting them on the Albertina Sisulu freeway, east of Johannesburg, overturned, Ekurhuleni metro police said on Monday.
Inspector Kobeli Mokheseng said the truck was transporting 210 live pigs from Limpopo to Benoni when it lost control on Monday morning just after 6.30am on the R21 near an Engen garage.
The 20-year-old truck driver and 42-year old male passenger did not sustain any visible injuries.
“The driver claimed that it might have been a mechanical fault because he heard a bang coming from the rear trailer before he lost control of his truck, before overturning and killing at least 25 pigs in the process.”
Mokheseng said traffic was affected as the SPCA, emergency personnel and tow truck drivers arrived at the scene.
The cause of the accident would be investigated by the Ekurhuleni metro police’s accident reconstruction unit.
