Pro footballer and Police Academy star Bubba Smith was found dead in his home in Los Angeles yesterday at age 66.
Smith won the 1971 Super Bowl with the Baltimore Colts and later went on to play the softly spoken regular character Moses Hightower in six Police Academy films.
It is not yet confirmed how he died, but police say it is not being treated as suspicious. An autopsy will be carried out, but police believe Smith died of natural causes.
He was born Charles Aaron Smith in Beaumont Texas on Februayr 28 1945 and made his name as a football player for Michigan State University.
Smith moved to the National Football League with the Baltimore Colts in 1967 and also played with the Oakland Raiders and the Houston Oilers.
After retiring from football in 1976, Smith’s acting career began with small roles in TV shows like Wonder Women, Taxi and Charlie’s Angels before he was in the first Police Academy film in 1984.
