Police are seeking to identify a man who was seen running from the scene of a stabbing at the Notting Hill Carnival.

In a set of images captured by a photographer covering the event, the man can be seen to be fleeing the scene, despite a passer-by’s attempts to trip him up.

The 20-year-old victim of the attack collapsed moments after being stabbed. Police and paramedics treated him at the scene before the man was rushed to hospital. His condition has been described as serious but stable.

Despite the stabbing, police have hailed this year’s carnival as very peaceful. There had been fears that trouble would flare up following the riots and looting that affected London earlier this month.

More than 6,500 police officers were deployed in Notting Hill on Monday and a total of 243 arrests were made over the weekend. The police were given extra powers to stop and search, with metal detectors being used to catch people carrying weapons. The event was also subject to a 7pm finishing time, earlier than in previous years.

Four men have been arrested in connection with the stabbing, while police continue to appeal for help in tracking down the man in the photographs.
