Two Johannesburg Metro police officers were arrested for corruption, the Johannesburg Metro Police Department said on Saturday.

Spokesman Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said the officers, a man and woman, solicited a bribe from a female motorist who had a warrant of arrest against her for unpaid traffic fines, at a roadblock in Sandton on Wednesday.

“The officers released her and agreed that they would collect an amount of R500,00 from her home in Boksburg on Thursday. She agreed.”

Minnaar said they later called her and asked for R800,00 and she agreed.

She reported the matter to the department’s corruption hotline.

“The two officers were arrested after one of them took the R800,00 from the motorist in Boksburg on Thursday.”

Minnaar said the two would be suspended as soon as they were released on bail.
