According to the Daily Telegraph, some 10,000 university students, student unionists and academics descended on Sydney’s Town Hall to protest against the federal Budget cuts on Wednesday afternoon.

The Herald Sun said that in Melbourne several protesters, including a 15-year-old girl, were dragged by police from the tram track at Spring Street station, where they had staged a sit-in. TNT understands that, in total, some 2000 protesters took to the streets there.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott and education minister Christopher Pyne meanwhile cancelled a visit to Deakin University.

Students are protesting against the government’s budget plans to cut the public funding of university courses by 20% on average and deregulate fees, allowing universities to charge as much as they wish.
