The woman is charged with being found in an “immoral position” car when the police approached her and her fiancé in their car on September 3, after police had stopped them.
She has alleged that two of the three police man who stopped her went on to rape her.
President of the Tunisian Association of Democratic Women Ms Ahlem Belhadj told AFP: “Within our culture, even in the legal system, there is a tendency to hold victims responsible for their rape”.
The woman’s husband faces charges of indecency, too. Should the two police be convicted they could face lengthy jail terms or even the death sentence. The story has been front page news in Tunisia and has gripped the nation.
