The allegations the investigation has brought about focus on two UK poultry processors who supply a range of retailers including Tescos, M&S, and Sainsburys, who are each launching emergency investigations into the matter.
The processors, 2 Sisters Food Group and Faccenda Foods, have come under fire after evidence has appeared to show a number of instances of hygiene standards being flouted, including carcasses being returned to the production line after touching workers’ boots and a factory floor being ‘flooded with chicken guts’.
Campylobacter has been a problem in the poultry industry for around a decade, and despite calls for a crackdown on standards, the Food Standards Agency has reversed its decision to publish results of investigations into the bug after pressure from industry and government agencies.
Both companies involved have denied the allegations.
