Game show Red or Black's first millionaire winner has been in jail for assault.
Nathan Hageman, who spent two and a half years in jail for ABH, plans to use the prize money to turn his life around.
The 31-year-old won the cash by correctly predicting red on the spin of a roulette wheel on Saturday's game show, presented by Ant and Dec.
Yesterday, the bricklayer admitted that he had done time for breaking into a man's house and beating him up following an argument over a woman.
He admits that he was an "idiot" over the assault.
Speaking of the win, he said: "This win hasn't sunk in — it was just hours ago that Simon Cowell had his arm round me and was telling me, 'Well done'. But I'm glad it's happened. I want to turn my life around. Three years ago I was in jail."
He said: "I got mixed up with the wrong woman, someone I shouldn't have been involved with. I was doing things I regret, drinking and dabbling in drugs. I was a mess.
"I decided to get out of the situation and ended up with another woman, who was such a nice girl — completely different.
"But the woman I left wouldn't leave me alone. Then I started getting calls from a guy in Reading. He was very threatening. I think she'd got involved with him.
"I tried to brush it off but he kept saying he was going to harm me. One night he told me my address and said he was going to come round and batter me in front of my mum and niece Mya, who was only about two."
Scared for his family, Nathan took the matter into his own hands and assaulted the man.
"He wasn't seriously hurt, but he made a complaint and I was arrested. I was charged with aggravated burglary and ABH. I pleaded guilty straight away as I knew what I'd done was wrong. I got five years."
Nathan served two and a half years.
