THE SCENE One of the latest to open on Streatham High Road, this pub-restaurant is a local treat. Rustic with sparse decor inside, it has the right amount of well-sourced woodwork and contradictorily matched tables and chairs to give it quirk, but not pretension. There’s a quieter, candlelit dining area at the rear, frequent bands and musical performances, too (from indie acoustic duos to Elvis impersonators), plus board games for settling in for a Sunday afternoon sesh.
The grub There’s standard pub fare that’s simple, but heartily solid – burgers, hand-cut chips (just chips, no twice-cooked nonsense), beer-battered cod and pork belly. They do a cracking Saturday brunch and are famed locally for their sterling Sunday roast – we tried, we were full. Sausage rolls and scotch eggs snacks sit bar-side to accompany that on-the-way-home pint, too.
Behind the bar A healthy selection of beers and ales (Heineken, Grolsch, Meantime Pale Ale, Cotswold Wheat Beer, Jaipur and more) with various weekly guest ales.

verdict It’s a quality local that is great for passing away a few hours of a weekend, ideally suited for a group night out, and well-equipped for a slap-up, but not bank-emptying, dinner. Thumbs up! alasdair morton
