Getting There

Fly

As a continental hub and tourist drawcard Rio is very well connected to Europe and North America. International flights arrive at RIOgaleão – Tom Jobin airport 20km outside of Rio. There are good bus connections from here to the city centre. Shuttle flights and some domestic routes fly from Santos Dumont airport, on the bay near the centre of the city.

Bus

Long distance buses arrive at the rodoviária Novo Rio in the city centre.

Getting Around

The Rio Metro runs through the city centre and on to Flamengo and Copacabana. City buses are plentiful and run just about everywhere. Check the front of the bus for the destination.

At night it’s safer to take taxis – avoid hailing on the street, rather book one from your accommodation or make for a designated taxi rank. Be sure that your taxi has a taxi rank inscription.

Don’t leave Rio without riding the bondinho tram that winds it way up from the cathedral over the Arcos de Lapa viaduct to Santa Teresa.
