Sarah Palin has said that media organisations should credit Donald Trump for pressuring President Obama to release his birth certificate.

Former Alaska governor Palin tweeted: “Media: admit it, Trump forced the issue. Now, don’t let the WH distract you w/the birth crt from what Bernanke says today. Stay focused, eh.”

Barack Obama yesterday released his long-form birth certificate to bring an end to the “birther debate” in which members of the opposition argued that he was born overseas.

Obama said that the birther issue had become a distraction. “We aren’t going to be able to solve these problems if we get distracted by sideshows and carnival barkers,”

Palin has criticized the White House recently for not releasing the birth certificate and now believes America should be thanking Donald Trump for clearing up the issue.

Potential presidential Republican candidate Donald Trump said: “I’m very proud of myself because I accomplished something that nobody else was able to accomplish,”

Trump said he would study the birth cetificate during a flight home.

The White House thought the birther debate wasn’t good for the country.

“The president believed the distraction over his birth certificate wasn’t good for the country,” White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer said. “It may have been good politics and good (television), but it was bad for the American people and distracting from the many challenges we face as a country.”

“At a time of great consequence for this country — when we should be debating how we win the future, reduce our deficit, deal with high gas prices, and bring stability to the Middle East, Washington, D.C., was once again distracted by a fake issue,” Pfeiffer added. “The president’s hope is that with this step, we can move on to debating the bigger issues that matter to the American people and the future of the country.”
