A passer-by made the horrific discovery when a fisherman at The Chase nature reserve in east London asked him to help investigate “something unusual” in the water.
The man, who wishes not to be named, said: “I got there, and this thing that looked like part of a pig was lying on the verge half out of the water.
“It was disgusting. The stench of rotting flesh was really strong – a couple of the people there were heaving.”
The family of Neil Buchel, a missing father-of-two last seen less than two miles from where the leg was found, have been informed.
However lead investigator Det Ch Insp Chris Jones has said it is too early to confirm whether there is any connection between his case and the discovery.
