The attack took place as confident swimmer and volunteer lifeguard Christine was with her swimming group who met at the beach each morning.
Christine’s family have issued a statement saying: “Swimming brought her much joy and many friends. She will be sadly missed by all who loved her, especially by Rob, her husband of 44 years.”
A helicopter and boat are being used to search for her remains.
On Wednesday, the body of a missing 38-year-old man was discovered with shark bites in it, although whether this was the cause of death is unclear.
In recent decades, fatal shark attacks in Australia have averaged less than two per year.
