The condom glows green when its molecules detects the bacteria present in chlamydia. It’s blue for syphilis, yellow for herpes and purple for human papillomavirus. And while the potential healthcare benefits are obvious, we suspect it might also make for a few awkward silences in the bedroom.
The ‘S.T.EYE’ condom is the brainchild of Daanyaal Ali, 14, Muaz Nawaz, 13, and Chirag Shah, 14, from Isaac Newton Academy in Ilford, Essex. The trio walked away with a £1000 prize and earned a trip to Buckingham Palace after winning the TeenTech award for best health innovation.
“We wanted to create something that makes detecting harmful STIs safer before, so that people can take immediate action in the privacy of their own homes without the invasive procedures at the doctors,” said Daanyaal, as reported by TeenTech.
“We’ve made sure we’re able to give peace of mind to users and make sure people can be even more responsible than ever before.”
The design is still in the conceptual stage, but the students have reportedly already been approached by a condom manufacturer with a view to fine-tuning and marketing their invention.
One thing we’re not 100 per cent clear on….is the condom’s special coating applied solely to the outside of the condom? Or to the inside as well? I mean, come on, chaps – fair’s fair…
