It was a dramatic night in which an extended rain delay had put the Scorchers on the brink of elimination but they ended up with a bizarre five-run Duckworth-Lewis victory.

Perth opened the batting and powered to a total 193-5, the second biggest at the SCG, with opener Craig Simmons hitting 112 off 58 balls.

Then came rain and play looked unlikely to restart. It did – within one minute of being abandoned – and Sydney were told they needed 10.8 an over to win (the hosts’ target was adjusted to 54 runs from five overs).

Still the Sixers were unable to chase it down, opener Nic Maddinson (36 off 16) falling agonisingly short of leading a heroic reduced run-chase victory.

The loss ended the Sixers’ dream of winning a second BBL title and denied them another crack at the lucrative Champions League.
