Last week the 28-year-old actor hit the headlines after being arrested at a performance of the musical Cabaret at the Studio 54 theatre in New York.

He is no stranger to controversy, infamously retiring from all public life on Twitter in January and head-butting a stranger in a south London pub the same month.

In February he went to a premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival wearing a paper bag on his head with the words “I am not famous anymore” written on it after earlier walking out of a news conference for director Lars von Trier’s new film Nymphomaniac in which he quoted former footballer Eric Cantona.

“He understands that these recent actions are a symptom of a larger health problem and he has taken the first of many necessary steps towards recovery,” his publicist Melissa Kates said, confirming he voluntarily asked for outpatient care for his addition.
