Outrage has been expressed on sites like Twitter in relation to the new laws that were brought in to reduce alcohol related violence in Sydney.

Keen social media users took to their site of choice to show their anger.

One user said: “the 1:30am lock-out is a joke,” while another said in a doomsday like proposition, “RIP Sydney.”

New South Wales Premier, Barry O’Farell explained that the new laws were not meant to affect responsible drinkers.

“This is not about penalising responsible drinkers,” he said. “It is about attacking the irresponsible acts of those who allow themselves to be intoxicated, whether by drugs or alcohol.”

The new restrictions will apply to venues in the area stretching from Kings Cross to Cockle Bay, The Rocks to Haymarket and Darlinghurst. Other measures to curb drunken violence include minimum eight-year sentences for fatal one-punch assaults influenced by drugs or alcohol and come after the death of an 18-year-old who was attacked in Sydney.
