Sofia Coppola, who’s best known for directing The Virgin Suicides, Lost in Translation and, more recently, The Bling Ring, is set to turn her hand to Hans Christian Andersen’s tragic tale (tail?), which has a very different ending to the Disney story.

In the original story, our heroine doesn’t get the man and the legs she wants – she’s told to kill the Prince to become a mermaid again, she doesn’t, commits suicide, then she turns to sea foam.

Coppola has said that she won’t shy away from the gritty subject matter – she’ll be sticking closely to the narrative from the original 1837 story.
