24-year-old Chantal Beyer is in intensive care after the white rhinoceros attacked her from behind, piercing her with its horn causing broken ribs and a collapsed lung.
Beyer was sightseeing with her husband at Aloe Ridge Hotel and Nature Reserve near Johannesburg. They posed for photos next to two adult rhinos when the park’s owner Alex Richter reportedly requested that they “stand just a little bit closer”, according to a report by local newspaper, Afrikaans-language Beeld, who spoke to the girl’s uncle Thom Peeters.
Beyer is said to now be in a stable condition.
The park also features hippopotamus, cape buffalo, zebra, eland, giraffe and 230 species of birds, promising up close experiences with the wildlife.
