Star Wars: Episode I will have its 3D launch in February 2012, say 20th Century Fox and Lucasfilm.

The 3D rumours have been swirling for years but now it looks set to become reality. A statement from Lucasfilm yesterday read:

“There are few movies that lend themselves more perfectly to 3D; from the Death Star trench run to the Tatooine Podrace, the ‘Star Wars Saga’ has always delivered an entertainment experience that is completely immersive.”

Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace will be the first of the franchise to get the high-tech treatment and under current plans, the release of subsequent films in the series in 3D could become an annual event on the film calendar.

Although Fox said it has not decided on a specific release date, sources suggested that it will be around Valentine’s Day.

However, not everyone is feeling the love for Starwars 3D and many fans have accused George Lucas of cashing in on the £D bandwagon and destroying his cult film in the process.

One fan wrote on Twitter: “Dear George Lucas, no one will go see StarWars in post production 3D. Stop milking this dead cow already!”

However for other Starwars disciples it’s a dream come true.

“This will be the greatest time of our lives. I’m planning NOW, and only want my loved ones with me,” ranted one believer.
