Royston Westbrook waited at the same bus stop as Stephen, 18 and his friend Duwayne Brooks, as he made his way home from his job at Grove Park hospital. He said: “It was so quick. It was really quick. It was about 10 seconds. My impression going away from that was they managed to punch him and that was it.”

Westbrook told the Old Bailey how attackers “just collided” with the two teenagers in Eltham on April 22, 1993. Westbrook said he did not see any weapons, but that the attackers were quiet throughout the attack. He said: “It was quite strange as generally if you see a fight or anything there generally is some sort of shouting or swearing. Nothing was said, because it was so quiet at that time of night and you would have heard something.

“They stood there for a few seconds and then they walked off. They did not run.” He added: “From my viewpoint, it was a completely unprovoked attack. They did nothing to justify it.”

Alexandra Marie, from France, was working as an au pair in England at the time of the murder and saw the attack from the bus stop. Marie said Lawrence didn’t fight back when he was attacked by “several” attackers. She said: There were some white men who were like kicking him and holding him at the same time, but the young man didn’t reply. He tried to protect himself.”

Gary Dobson, 36, and David Norris, 35, both from south London are on trial for Lawrence’s murder. The prosecution claims they were part of a gang linked by “racial animosity and motivation”. The pair deny murder. The case continues.
