A teacher who looted a shop during the London riots was one of the first people to appear in court, defying the rioter stereotype of a disadvantaged inner-city youth.

More than 1,000 people were arrested in the London riots, leaving magistrates with a huge job as they work through the list of looters and vandals.

31-year-old teacher Alexis Bailey, from Battersea, was one of the first to appear in court, arrested for looting Richer Sounds in Southend Road, Croydon.

Bailey works full-time in a primary school in Stockwell and lives with his parents. For his part in London’s riots and looting, he was given bail and a curfew.

Courthouse staff have been working day and night to catch up with cases stemming from the riots.

Defendants range in age from teenagers to people in their 40s.
