South Africa’s Test spin bowler Paul Harris has broken a bone at the base of his left thumb.

Harris sustained the injury during a catching practice on Wednesday, before the start of the first Castle Lager Test against Bangladesh.

Cricket South Africa media manager Michael Owen-Smith said Harris had x-rays on Thursday morning to confirm the injury.

“He will be able to bowl in this Test, but we don’t know at this stage if he will be able to bowl in the second Test,” said Owen-Smith. “We are waiting for a full medical report.”

Harris’s injury is similar to the one sustained by Dale Steyn during the tour of England. Steyn missed the last two Tests because of the injury.
