The scene Outside, there are picnic tables for al fresco drinking, and inside is spacious with open fires for cosy nights in the winter.

The decor is modern and, unfortunately, rather underwhelming – fake logs stacked up, huge mirrors and tall floor lamps make it seem as though you’ve just walked into someone’s living room – and doesn’t really befit its 16th-century history (it was a former inn), which is a shame.

As such, there’s nothing really wrong with the venue per se, but its lack of charm and character means it’s knocked down from four stars to a less-inspirational three stars.

The grub Decent pub grub with a few fancy surprises – think feta salad with watermelon and pomegranate; hand-carved, home-cooked ham and eggs, served with chutney and chips; and mature cheddar cheese and bacon burgers.

Behind the bar There’s a good selection of wines from around the world, as well as a wide choice of Kentish cask ales and international lagers.

Bill please Starters from £4.50; mains from £7.95; desserts from £3.95. Small glass of wine from £2.70; pint of beer from £3.54.

Verdict Worth checking out for a drink and pub grub if in the area. carol driver
